So I finally got around to setting up my new gift card from the mall today, and registering it online was straightforward. Just had to go to the giftcardmall site, enter the card number and the PIN from the back, then fill in my name and email. Took maybe two minutes, and now I can check the balance anytime and even reload it if I want. Thought it would be more complicated, but it was painless.
